Therapy Dogs International Therapy Dogs ( your dog must be at least 1yr of age to take this test) Many dog owners complete AKC Canine Good Citizen® ( CGC) training and testing as a prerequisite to therapy dog certification. While the AKC does not certify therapy dogs, this is a fabulous beginning to your therapy dog career. We strongly encourage owners to continue training beyond CGC in order to develop some off-leash control, increase the dog's reliability, and to further enhance the bond that has been built during CGC training. We are very proud that so many CGC dogs and their owners volunteer their time to improve the lives of other people. There are national therapy dog groups (and in some cities local groups) that certify therapy dogs. Therapy Dogs International (TDI) uses the AKC Canine Good Citizen test as a key component of its therapy dog assessment. TDI can be reached at

Delta Society Therapy Dogs ( must be at least 1 year old and have been owned for at least 6 months.) Delta Society® is an international, non-profit, human service organization with a very unique mission. Uniting millions of Americans who have mental and physical illnesses and disabilities with professionally trained therapy animals and service dogs, Delta Society programs promote human health and well-being through interactions with companion animals. * If you are in the Doylestown, Pa area, I would recommend that you get your Delta certification. The Doylestown Hospital only allows Delta certified pets into their facility. They also require that the test is administered by themselves. There is a written test as well as a training test. If you are interested in certification, please visit the Delta website for the test preparation kit. Once you feel you dog is ready, you may contact the Doylestown Hospital to be put on the waiting list for testing. The Delta Society can be reached at |

While this is a fabulous beginning, we strongly encourage owners to continue training beyond CGC in order to develop some off-leash control, increase the dog's reliability, and to further enhance the bond that has been built during CGC training. After you and your dog earn the CGC award, we hope to see you in some of the other AKC activities that are rewarding, enriching and fun!
